Established in 2001, the Dot NAME domain name extension is the only one supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to reserve john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already acquired third-level domains remained working.
