SSH, or Secure Shell, is a network protocol used to connect to a web server and perform various tasks using a command line. The protocol is popular with many skilled users, as the information transmitted over it is encrypted, so it may not be intercepted on the way by a third party. SSH access may be employed for a lot of things depending on the type of web hosting account. With a shared hosting account, in particular, SSH is among the ways to import/export a database or to upload a file when the hosting server allows for it. In case you have a virtual or a dedicated server, SSH can be used for virtually everything - you may install software or restart particular services such as the web server or the database server which run on the machine. SSH is employed primarily with UNIX-like Operating Systems, but there are clients that permit you to employ the protocol if your laptop or computer is running a different OS too. The connection is established on TCP port 22 by default and the remote web server always listens for incoming connections on that port even though many service providers change it for security reasons.
SSH Telnet in Shared Hosting
SSH access is available with all Linux shared plans which we offer. With some of them, it is included as standard, while with others it's an optional upgrade that you can add with just a few clicks in your website hosting CP. You may get SSH access through the section related to it where you will also find the info which you need to connect - the host, the port number and the username. You may choose the password that you shall use and, if needed, you shall be able to modify it with several mouse clicks from the same location. All commands that can be used with our shared packages are listed inside a help article alongside relevant instances. If the SSH access function is permitted for your account, you shall also be able to upload files through your favorite FTP client via an SFTP connection.
SSH Telnet in Semi-dedicated Servers
SSH access is offered by default with some of our semi-dedicated server solutions, while with others you are able to add it via the hosting CP if needed - even just for the current month. Either way, you could activate and de-activate the feature with one click from the SSH section of the CP. In the same place, you will find the server name, the port number and the username required to connect to our platform. You will also find a box in which you could type the password that you'd like to use, as it doesn't have to be the same as the one you use to log into the Control Panel. For better security, you can also change it as often as you need. The full list of the commands that can be performed in a semi-dedicated account is provided in our Knowledge Base, alongside the syntax and a number of examples. An extra function after SSH access is activated shall be the ability to connect to your hosting space via SFTP using any FTP client that supports this type of connections.
SSH Telnet in VPS Servers
All our VPS server solutions come with SSH access as standard, so you won't need to include any upgrades or activate anything - the instant the server is set up and you receive its login info, you'll be able to connect through its primary IP address and the login credentials which you have chosen during the signup process. Due to the fact that the VPS accounts include full root-level access, there aren't any restrictions with regards to the commands that you could run. Your server will be isolated from the others on the physical machine, so you will be able to manage more or less everything using a command line, including server-side software installations and reboots. That way, you are able to work with your files, databases and any apps that you install in a fast and risk-free way.
